A global coalition of soccer fan organizations has initiated a petition urging Gianni Infantino to step down as FIFA president following his proposal to sell future World Cup revenues to private entities. The petition, labeled InfantinOut, also demands a restructuring of FIFA to prevent similar controversies in the future.
Describing Infantino’s actions as a “shameful attempt” to commercialize the World Cup, the petition highlights the negative implications of his plan and the subsequent public outcry that led to its abandonment. Notable fan groups supporting the petition include Football Supporters Europe, Football Supporters Africa, the Independent Supporters Council in North America, and approximately 40 national fan associations worldwide.
Despite mounting pressure from various soccer governing bodies, including UEFA, CONCACAF, and the Asian Football Confederation, Infantino has refused to resign. The fan petition criticizes his leadership style, citing concerns about centralized power, lack of transparency, and a lack of accountability within FIFA.
The petition underscores Infantino’s controversial track record, including his involvement in contentious projects like the European Super League and advocating for biennial World Cups. It concludes by asserting that Infantino’s resignation is crucial for FIFA’s credibility and the future integrity of the sport.
