Summer McIntosh, the holder of the women’s 400-meter freestyle world record, did not qualify for the A final at the Pan Pacific Swimming Championships in Irvine, California. In the morning heat, McIntosh was aiming for second place behind Australia’s Lani Pallister but finished third, securing the ninth overall position with a time of 4 minutes 8.56 seconds, which was 14 seconds slower than her record time. China’s Fan Yaqi, aged 15, clinched the final spot in the A final with a time of 4:08.36.
McIntosh, a 19-year-old Canadian swimmer from Toronto, expressed her disappointment in an Instagram post, taking full responsibility for her performance and acknowledging her fans’ support. She and her teammate Ella Cosgrove, who placed 13th overall, will compete in the B final at 10:01 p.m.
The live stream of the event can be watched on CBCSports.ca and CBC Gem. McIntosh, who recently set a new record of 3:54.18 at the Canadian swimming trials, missed the chance to qualify for the 400-meter freestyle final at the Pan Pacific Championships.
The highly anticipated A final featured top swimmers like Katie Ledecky, Lani Pallister, and McIntosh. Ledecky secured the top spot in the qualifying round with a time of 4:03.48, while Pallister finished fourth with a time of 4:05.22.
McIntosh, who claimed a silver medal in the 200-meter freestyle earlier in the competition, set a championship record of 1:53.86. She continued her success by winning two more medals, breaking the championship record in the 400 individual medley and earning a bronze in the women’s 200 free relay.
McIntosh is scheduled to compete in the 200 IM on Saturday as she aims to add more achievements to her successful Pan Pacific Championships debut.
