“Principal Seeks Answers and Compensation After Hyundai Car Fire”

Three months following a distressing car fire incident, Jason Pelletier remains in limbo, seeking answers and additional compensation from Hyundai. The event unfolded on June 9 as the school principal was navigating a bustling Toronto highway in his Santa Fe. Suddenly, thick black smoke and flames erupted from the vehicle’s hood, rendering the engine and brakes unresponsive.

Struggling to escape the five-lane traffic on Highway 401 during the morning rush, Pelletier managed to exit the car just in time before a massive explosion engulfed the front end. Adding to his unease was the fact that he had recently taken the SUV to the dealership for a head gasket replacement – a crucial component that ensures proper combustion pressure and prevents coolant and oil mixing.

Despite noticing a burning odor post-service, Pelletier was assured by the service manager that it was residual. Subsequent text messages about light smoke emitting from the hood went unanswered. The next day, a warning message on the vehicle’s touchscreen flagged a potential issue with the engine control system, advising a comprehensive system check.

Hyundai Canada, emphasizing safety as paramount, declined an interview but expressed commitment to investigating the matter. Joe Hakim, the dealership’s general manager, disclosed that Hycay Consulting Engineering, in collaboration with the insurance company, had initiated a joint probe into the fire’s cause.

Transport Canada reported 1,140 vehicle fire incidents from 2016 to 2026, with about 15% involving Hyundai vehicles. Notably, in 2023, Hyundai recalled over 320,000 vehicles in Canada due to an anti-lock braking system flaw. Pelletier’s Santa Fe, although unaffected by that recall, had been subject to two other recalls due to potential engine failure and fire risks.

With ongoing forensic scrutiny of his charred Santa Fe and no resolution in sight, Pelletier is dismayed by the prolonged ordeal. His insurer compensated him for the vehicle’s pre-fire value and a rental car but not for personal belongings lost in the blaze, including valuable items related to his alter ego, Jezebel Bardot, during Pride Month.

Expressing reluctance to drive another Hyundai, Pelletier has opted for a different SUV brand. Amidst uncertainties and unanswered questions, he hopes for closure and reassurance that automakers prioritize consumer safety above all else.
