As people go online today, it’s crucial to ensure the security of their accounts. World Password Day on May 7 serves as a reminder that many individuals still leave their online services vulnerable to cyber threats due to common password practices.

Whether connecting to home Wi-Fi or using digital services, millions of users rely on easily crackable passwords. Reusing the same passwords across multiple accounts makes it simpler for cybercriminals to breach personal information.

Recent research by Hybrid Cloud Services reveals that one in eight individuals use a single password for all accounts, a risky behavior. Additionally, about 36% of users utilize between one and three passwords for all their online activities.

Only 19% of people employ a unique password for each account, which is considered the safest approach to online security. Despite numerous warnings from cybersecurity experts, common passwords like “admin,” “123456,” and “password” continue to be widely used in the UK.

To enhance account security, experts recommend enabling two-factor authentication whenever possible. Creating longer, more complex passwords and utilizing a password manager are also advised to manage credentials securely and discourage password reuse.

Matt Cooke, EMEA Cybersecurity Strategist at Proofpoint, emphasizes the importance of avoiding weak passwords and encourages the use of multi-factor authentication and password managers to enhance security. Personal passwords should be updated biannually, while business passwords should be changed every three months.

Improving password security can be achieved by using passphrases instead of simple passwords, generating unique passwords for each account, and employing a password manager to securely store credentials and maintain strong, distinct passwords across all accounts.
