“Congresswoman Ilhan Omar Attacked with Unknown Substance”

During a town hall meeting in Minneapolis, a man attacked Democratic US Representative Ilhan Omar by spraying an unknown substance on her, amid heightened tensions surrounding immigration enforcement.

This incident occurred shortly after the tragic death of an intensive care nurse and mother of three who was shot by federal agents earlier this month.

Following the assault on Tuesday, January 27, the attacker was quickly subdued as startled attendees watched. A witness exclaimed, “He sprayed something on her.”

The assailant, wearing a black jacket and holding a syringe, was restrained with his arms secured behind his back.

The attack took place after Omar called for the dismantling of US Immigration and Customs Enforcement and demanded the resignation of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem, stating, “ICE cannot be reformed.”

Minneapolis police reported that the man used a syringe to spray an unidentified liquid at Omar, resulting in his immediate arrest and transportation to county jail on third-degree assault charges, as per reports from the Express.

Police confirmed that forensic scientists were dispatched to the scene.

Despite the attack, Omar continued with the town hall after the assailant was removed. Journalists noted a strong, vinegar-like smell in the air following the incident.

After receiving a medical check-up, Omar reassured her followers, “I’m OK. I’m a survivor, so this minor incident won’t deter me from my work. I don’t let bullies win.”

President Trump has criticized Omar in the past, referring to her as “garbage” during a recent Cabinet meeting. He further disparaged her during a speech in Iowa, emphasizing his administration’s stance on admitting immigrants who demonstrate love for the country.

Republican politician Nancy Mace expressed her dismay at the attack on Omar, emphasizing that elected officials should not face physical harm regardless of ideological differences. Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey also condemned the assault, highlighting that violence and intimidation have no place in the city.

Recent years have seen a rise in assaults and threats targeting members of Congress, with data from the U.S. Capitol Police showing a peak in such incidents in 2021 following the Capitol attack in January of that year.
