“HBO Announces Baldur’s Gate TV Series with Chernobyl Creator”

HBO is set to bring another popular video game franchise to the small screen with a TV adaptation of Baldur’s Gate. The series is commissioned by Hasbro, the owner of Dungeons and Dragons, the universe where Baldur’s Gate is situated. Wizards of the Coast, the developers behind most D&D content, will be involved as consultants for the show.

Craig Mazin, known for his work on Chernobyl and The Last of Us, will be writing, executive producing, and showrunning the Baldur’s Gate series. The show is confirmed to pick up right after the events of Baldur’s Gate 3, promising to feature returning characters from the game.

Mazin expressed his enthusiasm for the project, citing his extensive experience playing Baldur’s Gate 3. He mentioned reaching out to the original voice cast to potentially involve them in the show. However, Larian Studios, the creators of Baldur’s Gate 3, will not be part of the HBO production as the license has reverted to Wizards of the Coast.

Despite Larian’s absence, Mazin has engaged in discussions with Larian CEO Swen Vincke to explore potential narrative directions. The TV adaptation of video games seems to be on the rise, with successful shows like Fallout Season 2 and upcoming projects such as The Last of Us, God of War, and Lara Croft. The release date for the Baldur’s Gate series is yet to be announced, but anticipation is already building among fans.
