Melania Trump has made a rare foray into politics in response to the recent ICE shootings and unrest in the United States.
Expressing her stance against violence, she urged protestors to demonstrate peacefully during an interview with Fox & Friends on Tuesday. Melania also commended Donald Trump for his productive discussions with Minnesota Governor Tim Walz and Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey, both of whom are affiliated with the Democratic Party.
Highlighting the collaborative efforts to maintain peace and prevent riots, Melania emphasized the importance of working together amid the turbulent events. Her decision to address the public follows a tragic incident where Alex Pretti, a 37-year-old intensive care nurse, was fatally shot by ICE agents in Minneapolis on Sunday.
Video footage captured the moment ICE agents disarmed Pretti, who was carrying a holstered handgun, before opening fire on him, resulting in his death at the scene. This incident occurred just over two weeks after another individual, Renee Good, was also killed by an ICE agent while seated in her car in the same city.
The shocking events, documented on camera, have sparked widespread outrage across the country, prompting calls for the removal of ICE from Minneapolis. Thousands have taken to the streets in protest, leading Governor Tim Walz to deploy the US National Guard to safeguard citizens.
Despite public outcry, the Trump administration has staunchly supported the actions of the ICE agents involved in both fatal shootings. Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem referred to Pretti as a “domestic terrorist” during a press briefing.
Family members of Alex Jeffrey Pretti described him as a compassionate intensive care nurse at the Veterans Administration who was troubled by Trump’s immigration policies in his community.
In response to the escalating situation, Trump announced the replacement of Border Patrol Commander Gregory Bovino with White House border czar Tom Homan in charge of ICE operations in Minneapolis. This decision was perceived as a critique of Noem’s management of the operation, with Trump emphasizing Homan’s toughness and fairness.
Despite these changes, reports indicate that immigration raids are ongoing in Minneapolis, drawing criticism from both Democrats and prominent Republicans who are advocating for a thorough investigation into the fatal incidents.
On Monday, Chris Madel, a defence lawyer and Republican gubernatorial candidate, withdrew from the race, denouncing ICE’s actions in Minnesota as a disastrous failure.
