The long-awaited games have finally kicked off after meticulous planning and extensive travel by 1,700 athletes. The city of Medicine Hat is not only hosting the event but also seeking to showcase its warm hospitality and boost economic development.
Nearly 1,700 athletes are participating in 10 sports, including bocce, bowling, powerlifting, athletics, basketball, gymnastics, and softball. The opening ceremonies at the city’s 6,000-seat hockey arena saw enthusiastic crowds waving provincial flags and cheering on the athletes.
Governor General Louise Arbour, impressed by the high level of activity, volunteerism, and sportsmanship, described the event as an inspiring phenomenon showcasing the Canadian community spirit. Nicola Lambrechts, chair of Special Olympics British Columbia, praised the athletes’ remarkable performances, noting their pride in representing their provinces.
The city of Medicine Hat has embraced the national event with around 1,500 local volunteers supporting the athletes, family members, and coaches. The city’s hotels are fully booked, welcoming guests from near and far to partake in the event. The event has not only spotlighted the city’s hosting capabilities but also contributed to its economic development strategy.
Medicine Hat, known for its volunteer culture and modern facilities, had to renew its bid to host the games after the 2022 event was canceled due to the pandemic. The event’s $3.6 million budget is funded through government grants, community support, and corporate donations, covering transportation, accommodation, meals, and organizing costs. The theme of the games, “we all shine together,” reflects the inclusive spirit of the Special Olympics movement.
