Parts of British Columbia are experiencing severe drought conditions this summer. The lack of water has led to restrictions on water use in Bessette Creek to protect salmon populations. Similarly, temporary protection orders were issued for the Salmon River watershed due to increased wildfire risk in the region. The Cowichan Lake Salmonid Enhancement Society is actively involved in rescuing fish from drying rivers through a process called fry salvage. Bob Crandall, the society’s treasurer, emphasizes the importance of human intervention to address the ecosystem challenges caused by drought.

Collaborating with the Ts’uubaa-asatx Nation and volunteers, the society relocates various fish species, like salmon, trout, and char, to areas with more water. However, the changing climate has made this task more challenging. Streams are drying up further upstream, making the relocation process more labor-intensive. Despite the use of aerators and bubblers to ensure fish survival during transport, the extreme conditions pose difficulties in moving fish to safety.

The Ts’uubaa-asatx Nation plays a vital role in the fry salvage efforts, utilizing drones to identify drying streams and aiding in the relocation process. Michelle Corfield, the Nation’s lands and resource director, stresses the significance of salmon conservation for the community’s heritage and future. She highlights the comprehensive approach taken by the Nation towards salmon conservation, focusing on river restoration and ocean conditions to ensure the sustainability of salmon populations.

In France, similar challenges are being faced due to severe drought and extreme heat. Jean-Pierre Faure of the Fédération de Pêche du Rhône notes the failure of fish relocation efforts in the wake of unprecedented weather events. The rising water temperatures have led to fish congregating in limited water sources, heightening competition and mortality rates. Faure emphasizes the need for ecosystem restoration and adaptive water management strategies rather than relying solely on short-term interventions like fish relocation, which can be costly and ineffective in the face of widespread drought conditions.
