“Voice of the Flames, Peter Maher, Remembered”

Renowned as the voice of Calgary Flames radio broadcasts for over three decades, Peter Maher passed away at the age of 79. His death was confirmed on Thursday. Maher began his tenure as the team’s play-by-play announcer for radio broadcasts in 1980 and went on to call 33 consecutive seasons for the Flames. Throughout his illustrious career, which included memorable moments like the team’s 1989 Stanley Cup victory and their 2004 finals appearance, Maher’s dedication and trademark catchphrases like “Yeah, baby!” and “You can put it in the win column!” became synonymous with Flames fandom in Calgary. He retired following the 2013-14 NHL season.

The Flames expressed their condolences to Maher’s loved ones and fans, acknowledging that his voice had become an integral part of the Flames fan experience. Born and raised in Campbellton, New Brunswick, Maher had previously covered Toronto Maple Leafs games for the CKO Radio Network before relocating to Calgary when the Flames moved from Atlanta in 1980.

Rob Kerr, who shared the press box with Maher at the Saddledome for years, lamented Maher’s passing, highlighting Maher’s commitment to delivering quality broadcasts, especially during times when radio was the primary medium for Flames coverage. Kerr emphasized Maher’s role as a storyteller of Flames history and praised his journalistic integrity and authenticity.

Maher’s broadcasting career extended beyond the Flames, including coverage of multiple NHL All-Star games, the 2005 IIHF World Championship, and the Canadian men’s hockey team’s games at the 2010 Winter Olympics. Recognized for his exceptional work as an NHL broadcaster, Maher was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2006, receiving the Foster Hewitt Memorial Award.

In honor of his contributions, the broadcast booth at the Scotiabank Saddledome was named after Maher upon his retirement in 2014. Additionally, Maher inspired an annual award in Calgary, presented by local media to the Flames player who embodies virtues such as sincerity, integrity, dedication, and respect.
