Unifor and General Motors have initiated discussions for a new labor agreement, commencing negotiations at a bargaining table in downtown Toronto. The union represents over 4,600 members at various GM facilities in Ontario, including the Oshawa assembly plant, CAMI facility in Ingersoll, and sites in St. Catharines and Woodstock.

During the kickoff, Unifor national president Lana Payne and Jack Uppal, president and managing director of GM Canada, officially started the talks with a handshake. The negotiation room was set up with chairs placed for officials at opposite ends, with Payne positioned in the middle and Uppal seated directly across.

Expressing confidence in the negotiation process, Payne mentioned that they are building on the solid foundation of the recent agreement with Ford. The focus is on discussing company operations and the future of automotive jobs at GM in Canada.

Setting a target deadline of August 21, the union aims to reach a tentative agreement with GM within the specified timeframe. Uppal emphasized the company’s commitment to the bargaining process and acknowledged the vital role employees play in GM’s success.

Unifor members recently approved a new three-year contract with Ford, which includes annual pay increases and program commitments at Ford facilities. The agreement also outlines a pathway to full employment for laid-off workers from the Oakville assembly plant by July 2027.

This successful negotiation with Ford has set a pattern for future bargaining efforts with GM and other automakers. Despite potential challenges ahead, including differences between Ford and other industry players like General Motors and Stellantis, Unifor remains determined to secure the future of the automotive sector in Canada.
