“UK Transitioning to Digital Voice: Copper Landlines Phasing Out”

The era of traditional copper landlines hanging over UK streets is drawing to a close as the nationwide shift to “Digital Voice” services is scheduled for January 2027. This transition signifies a significant change in UK communications, with BT’s Openreach network implementing the “Stop Sell” program to hasten the move away from outdated infrastructure.

Under these regulations, major providers like BT, Sky, Plusnet, and TalkTalk are no longer permitted to offer new copper-based broadband and phone services in impacted areas. The implementation of Stop Sell notifications has been steadily expanding, affecting around 1.69 million premises across 238 exchange locations.

Following the enforcement of these changes, customers seeking to upgrade or establish new services will need to migrate to full-fibre broadband and digital phone services, leaving behind the legacy copper network. Openreach clarified that the Stop Sell initiative is activated when the majority of premises connected to a specific exchange can access ultrafast Full Fibre, necessitating a transition to newer digital services.

By early June, Stop Sell rules will be operational in 1,432 exchanges nationwide, affecting approximately 14.2 million properties. James Lilley, Openreach’s Managed Customer Migrations Director, emphasized the importance of the Stop Sell program in accelerating the UK’s transition to a modern full-fibre future by moving towards more reliable digital infrastructure in areas where fibre is widely available.

Digital Voice, BT’s advanced home phone service, leverages broadband technology for digital calling, offering enhanced features like Multi Call and call diversion to mobile phones. Upgrading to Digital Voice typically incurs no additional charges for most households, as the cost is integrated into a bundled package with broadband services.
