A grandfather revived his wife on the side of a busy highway after she experienced a health crisis while sitting in the passenger seat of their vehicle.
Paul Cutler and his wife Suzanne were returning home to Dartford after a family event when Paul noticed Suzanne was unresponsive. He quickly pulled over on the M56 near Manchester and administered CPR on a grassy area beside the road.
Their daughter Annie, who was also in the car during the incident, called emergency services for assistance. Paul, a Dartford councilor and former mayor, mentioned the urgency of the situation and how he relied on his knowledge from TV shows to perform CPR effectively.
Despite the challenging circumstances with traffic passing by and the arrival of an air ambulance, Paul’s efforts were crucial. Paramedics eventually arrived and used a defibrillator to revive Suzanne, who had suffered a cardiac arrest.
Suzanne, a 57-year-old former mayoress, was then rushed to Wythenshaw Hospital in Greater Manchester for specialized care. After stabilizing overnight, Suzanne underwent further evaluation and gradually regained consciousness, with positive signs from routine tests.
Following a 25-day hospital stay, Suzanne was discharged just before the holiday season, allowing her to reunite with her family for her grandson’s birthday celebration. Paul, reflecting on the experience, emphasized the importance of timely CPR intervention and access to life-saving equipment like defibrillators in public places.
Paul’s dedication to raising awareness about CPR and advocating for defibrillators in schools stems from his wife’s previous health challenges, including a heart-related issue resulting from cancer treatment. He has actively engaged in educational campaigns and called for increased preparedness in schools to prevent sudden cardiac events.
As Suzanne continues her recovery with an implanted device monitoring her heart rhythm, Paul remains committed to spreading awareness and ensuring that more people are equipped to respond effectively in emergency situations.
