“Nepean Residents Grapple with Ongoing Flood Threat”

Residents in Nepean, like Aroha DeForest, have been dealing with the aftermath of severe flooding since 2023 when she first purchased sandbags to protect her property. Following a recent heavy rainfall on Canada Day, the sandbags have become a permanent feature in her laneway.

DeForest expressed the anxiety felt by many in the west end of Ottawa, describing it as a form of post-traumatic stress disorder triggered by weather warnings of potential tornadoes or heavy rain. The continuous rainfall, including 23.5 millimetres on Monday, has caused repeated flooding in parts of the city, leaving residents like DeForest and her neighbors on edge.

The ongoing threat of flooding has led residents to maintain constant vigilance, with some opting not to leave their homes or travel simultaneously to ensure someone is always monitoring the situation. The uncertainty of whether the next downpour will result in flooding for themselves or their neighbors has contributed to a sense of fear and unease.

City officials have identified the College, Bay, and Knoxdale-Merivale wards as the most severely affected areas by the recent floods. Knoxdale-Merivale Coun. Sean Devine, after meeting with affected residents, emphasized the need for increased support and acknowledged that many households are still grappling with the aftermath of the flooding.

The city is evaluating its response to the Canada Day storm and strategizing on how to enhance preparedness for future extreme weather events. Devine stressed the importance of addressing critical questions regarding investments and sacrifices needed to mitigate such disasters, emphasizing the urgency for government action in light of the rapid pace of natural disasters.

Another Nepean resident, Wesley Bova, shared concerns about the potential impact of future storms, despite the recent rainfall being less damaging than the Canada Day deluge. Bova highlighted the lingering apprehension within his family, stemming from the extensive cleanup following the previous flood, and the constant worry of a repeat disaster prompting them to keep belongings off the floor as a precaution.
