“Farage’s MPs Mistakenly Vote for Benefit Reform”

Two of Nigel Farage’s latest recruits to the Reform party mistakenly voted in favor of abolishing the two-child benefit limit during a recent Commons vote.

Former Conservative MPs Suella Braverman and Robert Jenrick aligned with Labour MPs to support the removal of the measure, potentially uplifting 450,000 individuals out of poverty. According to Sky News, Braverman and Jenrick found themselves inadvertently locked in the chamber after mistakenly choosing the aye lobby.

Nigel Farage, the leader of Reform UK, did not have a recorded vote, while the party’s other five MPs opposed the government’s proposal. A spokesperson for Reform stated that Braverman and Jenrick unintentionally walked through the wrong lobby, calling it a genuine mistake.

This incident follows Reform’s wavering stance on the issue, as Farage had previously committed to scrapping the two-child benefit limit but later revised the policy to apply only to families where both parents are British and employed full-time.

In response to the chaotic voting behavior, Labour minister Torsten Bell criticized the Reform MPs, emphasizing the lack of coordination within the party. Meanwhile, Tory leader Kemi Badenoch mocked Braverman and Jenrick, indicating they were now Farage’s responsibility.

The parliamentary blunder by Reform occurred as Labour’s bill to eliminate the two-child benefit limit passed its initial hurdle with overwhelming support from MPs. Chancellor Rachel announced in November’s Budget that the policy, held responsible for trapping children in poverty, would be terminated in April, potentially benefiting 450,000 children.

Introduced by former Tory official George Osborne in 2017, the policy restricts Child Tax Credits and Universal Credit to the first two children in a household. The recent vote marked the initial step in the legislative process to abolish this policy.
