“Piano Teacher Jailed for Sending Explicit Messages to Teen”

A piano instructor regarded as trustworthy has been imprisoned for sending sexually explicit messages to a 14-year-old girl, discovered by her father. Chris Higgins, aged 46, transmitted inappropriate messages to one of his students, causing the victim to undergo significant emotional distress. The illicit communications came to light when the girl’s father noticed a message on her phone from a contact named ‘Chris’ during a school night last September.

Despite stringent phone regulations, the father inspected the device and was shocked by the contents. Higgins, a respected teacher from Poulton-le-Fylde, Lancashire, was revealed to have been engaging in sexually explicit conversations with the young student. The father observed that his daughter had deleted some messages from the chat, leaving only recent messages visible, including vanishing messages that had been sent. Upon comparing the number of ‘Chris’ in his daughter’s phone to the one he had for Higgins, he discovered they were the same individual.

In one of the messages, Higgins acknowledged pushing the girl too far during their previous conversations. The girl’s father recorded the messages as evidence, leading her mother to contact the authorities the following day. Subsequently, Higgins was apprehended by the police, who seized his phone and uncovered additional disturbing messages, including mentions of taking the child to a hotel in London. Higgins, residing on Sanderling Drive, pleaded guilty to engaging in sexual communication with a minor.

He received a 10-month immediate custodial sentence at Lancaster Magistrates Court on January 29. Additionally, a Sexual Harm Prevention Order was imposed for ten years to monitor Higgins’ activities post-release from prison. The victim expressed the significant impact of the ordeal, affecting her academic performance, social relationships, and passion for playing the piano.

The victim’s parents highlighted the profound impact of the betrayal, emphasizing their enduring mistrust and anxiety resulting from the offender’s breach of trust. DC Stacey Billington of the Blackpool Child Protection Team condemned Higgins for exploiting his position to send inappropriate messages for personal gratification, acknowledging the resilience of the victim and her family throughout the investigation.

The case underscores the importance of parental vigilance in monitoring children’s digital interactions to prevent potential harm. The prompt action taken by the victim’s parents halted further misconduct by Higgins, underscoring the critical role of responsible parenting in safeguarding children online.
