Facial recognition technology has played a key role in the apprehension of several sex offenders within a short span, according to law enforcement authorities. Greater Manchester Police revealed that they have utilized Live Facial Recognition (LFR) cameras 23 times since October, leading to approximately 20% of the total arrests involving known sex offenders.
These specialized cameras, mounted on police vans, scan individuals’ faces for distinct biometric data (“faceprints”) and swiftly compare them against a watchlist of wanted criminals. In recent operations, GMP deployed the cameras at various locations including the city center, the airport, and notably, outside Old Trafford during the Manchester United vs. Manchester City derby.
The Home Office has supplied LFR cameras to police forces nationwide as part of trials, with a recent Metropolitan Police pilot in Croydon resulting in an arrest every 34 minutes on average. Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood announced plans to expand the availability of these camera vans to all forces in England and Wales, increasing the total number of units from 10 to 50 as part of a significant overhaul of policing strategies.
Despite facing criticism from privacy advocates, the Home Secretary defended the use of this technology, emphasizing its potential to enhance law enforcement efforts while ensuring alignment with societal values and minimizing the risk of wrongful accusations. The effectiveness of LFR cameras is evident in the outcomes achieved by Greater Manchester Police since their implementation in October 2025, including the apprehension of 40 individuals, with one-fifth of the arrests involving registered sex offenders.
One notable arrest involved a 43-year-old man, John Thompson, charged with multiple offenses after being caught in Piccadilly Gardens for breaching his Sexual Harm Prevention Order. Additionally, arrests for various crimes such as stalking, possession of indecent images, and domestic offenses have been made in different locations within Manchester.
The successful outcomes of LFR technology implementation extend beyond apprehensions, with instances of preventing potential harm and intercepting individuals with harmful intentions. Collaboration between law enforcement units and the effective utilization of this technology have significantly improved public safety and proactive policing measures, demonstrating its value as a crucial asset in safeguarding communities.
