The Billy Bishop Legion in Vancouver’s Kitsilano neighborhood is attracting a new demographic as yoga enthusiasts join veterans at the historic establishment. The Legion, along with others nationwide, is shifting its focus to appeal to younger Canadians like Hannah, who find a sense of community and connection within its walls. Efforts are being made to diversify the membership base, with free first-time memberships being offered in celebration of the Royal Canadian Legion’s 100th anniversary.

While maintaining its core mission of supporting veterans, the Legion is embracing change and growth. With over 100,000 new members already welcomed in 2026, the organization’s total membership has exceeded 300,000. Despite recent closures of some branches due to financial challenges, others like the Bala Legion in Muskoka Lakes, Ontario, have thrived by evolving their offerings. Plans are in place to develop affordable housing units to ensure long-term sustainability.

President Dennis Mills highlighted the Legion’s evolution and the importance of attracting new members to keep the community vibrant. The organization looks forward to continued growth and innovation as it enters its next chapter.
