A man from Quebec, aged 64, has made history in North America by being the first patient to receive a regenerated liver. This groundbreaking technology has the potential to increase the availability of transplantable livers by dozens within its initial year. Gérard Landry, a resident of Nouvelle in Quebec, battled liver issues for around 15 years, leading to cirrhosis and liver cancer.
Before undergoing liver transplant surgery, Landry received surprising news from his doctor. The doctor informed him that his new liver had been regenerated by a novel machine, utilized for the first time at the Centre hospitalier de l’Université de Montréal (CHUM) in Montreal. Landry expressed his joy, likening the news to a Christmas gift.
The innovative technology, named Liver Assist, enables doctors to assess and treat a donated liver externally before transplantation. For Landry, this meant receiving a liver that might have been considered too risky without the regeneration process.
Dr. David Hénault, a specialist in liver transplants at CHUM, led the project and conducted Landry’s surgery. The Liver Assist system functions by connecting a donated liver to a machine that circulates an oxygen-rich fluid through it, potentially reversing damage caused by oxygen deprivation. The technology allows doctors to transition to a blood-based solution to evaluate the liver’s performance in conditions mimicking the human body.
Hénault mentioned that the machine could make an additional 20 to 24 livers available for transplantation in its inaugural year, as per a study conducted with Transplant Québec. This number is expected to rise with wider adoption of the technology, benefiting more patients awaiting liver transplants.
Landry’s recovery progress has been exceptional, with his blood work showing positive signs shortly after the operation. He is currently recuperating in Montreal, eager to return to Gaspésie to continue his recovery and reunite with his family, friends, and horses. Landry hopes his story will inspire discussions about organ donation, emphasizing the importance of having donated organs available for advanced technologies to make a life-saving impact.
