Former Journalist Triumphs Over Cancer, Boost-Only Diet

Glenn Deir, a former journalist residing in St. John’s, reveals his journey as a six-pack-a-day consumer, not of beer but of Boost, a meal replacement drink, for five months post his throat surgery on July 13. The surgery involved removing cancerous tissues from his throat, leading to his reliance on Boost and pureed foods for sustenance while facing challenges with swallowing solid foods.

Despite ongoing swallow tests and difficulties with his throat muscles, Glenn persevered through radiation treatment and chemotherapy, even having to cancel a moose hunting trip due to his health condition. His radiation oncologist’s letter emphasizing his need for support and convalescence helped him navigate the situation.

Throughout his cancer treatment, Glenn maintained a positive outlook, indulging in light-hearted fantasies and humor, even during challenging moments like accidental water intake while undergoing chemotherapy. He diligently followed exercises to improve his tongue and jaw functions, eventually regaining the ability to consume solid foods after intensive swallow therapy sessions.

His culinary world expanded as he successfully reintroduced solid foods into his diet, albeit with adjustments due to reduced saliva production from radiation. Despite occasional coughing spells, Glenn’s progress in swallowing and eating has been steady, marking a significant milestone in his recovery journey.

Glenn’s story showcases resilience, humor, and determination in navigating the obstacles posed by cancer treatment, offering hope and inspiration to others facing similar challenges.
