The body of a 16-year-old boy who had gone missing during a three-day camping trip has been discovered in a national park in Australia. The teenager was found deceased in the Blue Mountains, approximately 60km from Sydney, on Thursday, January 29. Authorities located his body following a search that involved a rescue helicopter.
The boy embarked on the camping excursion on Tuesday, January 27, accompanied by his 17-year-old friend. They set off from Leura Train Station and trekked on foot to Mt Hay, as reported by officers from the Blue Mountains Police Area Command.
On Wednesday, January 28, at around 5.45pm, the 17-year-old activated his personal locator beacon after becoming separated from his companion. A search operation, involving both ground and aerial efforts, was initiated. While the 17-year-old was successfully rescued from the Acacia Flats camping ground, the 16-year-old boy remained missing.
The search persisted with the collaboration of local police, the Blue Mountains Rescue Squad, PolAir, NSW Ambulance paramedics, and the TOLL Rescue Helicopter. Tragically, the body of the missing teenager was located in a creek in Blue Gum Forest at around 1pm on Thursday.
Authorities will compile a report for the Coroner’s information regarding the teenager’s passing. A post-mortem examination is scheduled in the upcoming days to determine the cause of death, with a subsequent report prepared for the Coroner’s review.
