“Hansard Tragically Euthanized at Cheltenham Festival”

Hansard tragically passed away following the Singer Arkle Challenge Trophy Novices’ Chase at the first day of the renowned Cheltenham Festival. The eight-year-old horse, trained by Gary and Josh Moore, was considered an underdog in the Arkle race but unfortunately had to be pulled up due to an injury.

A statement released by the Jockey Club confirmed the unfortunate incident, stating that Hansard sustained a fatal injury during the race and, despite immediate veterinary attention, the decision was made to euthanize the horse for his welfare.

The Arkle Chase at 2 pm was claimed by Kargese, under the training of Willie Mullins. Winning jockey Danny Mullins expressed his satisfaction with the victory, highlighting the successful strategy employed during the race and praising the expertise of Willie Mullins.

While acknowledging the inherent risks in horse racing, The Jockey Club, responsible for organizing prestigious events like the Cheltenham and Aintree Festivals, diligently works to mitigate these risks. The racing industry has invested significantly in equine welfare over the years, with a focus on veterinary science, education, and research.

Efforts to enhance safety measures have yielded positive results, with a decrease in faller rates over the past two decades. Initiatives such as changing jump markers to aid equine vision, implementing padded hurdles, and conducting thorough reviews after any on-course fatalities have contributed to improved safety standards.

Collaboration with respected animal welfare organizations ensures that the racing industry upholds the highest standards of care for horses. Engaging the public through visits to training yards and aftercare centers has led to positive changes in perceptions of horse welfare.

With a substantial attendance of five million in 2025, horse racing remains a popular sporting event in the UK, second only to football in terms of audience size.
