“Amazon Ends Support for Older Kindle Models, Encourages Upgrades”

Amazon has announced that support for several of its older Kindle models is coming to an end, leading users to consider upgrading to newer devices. Starting May 20, 2026, models like the Kindle 5 and Kindle Paperwhite (1st Generation) will no longer be able to download new content from the Kindle Store. While existing books will remain accessible, users will not be able to purchase, borrow, or add new content after the cut-off date.

Affected users are being notified via email about the upcoming changes and are being offered a 20% discount on select new Kindle models, along with a £15 eBook credit, to assist in transitioning to more current devices. Amazon reassured users that accounts and Kindle Libraries will still be accessible through the free Kindle app and Kindle for Web.

The list of affected Kindle models includes the Kindle 1st Generation (2007), Kindle DX and DX Graphite (2009, 2010), Kindle Keyboard (2010), Kindle 4 (2011), Kindle Touch (2011), Kindle 5 (2012), and Kindle Paperwhite 1st Generation (2012).

If you own one of the impacted Kindle models, remember that while you can continue reading existing downloads, you will not be able to acquire new content or re-register the device if deregistered or factory reset. It might be a good time to consider upgrading, especially with Amazon’s recent launch of the latest Kindle Scribe devices in the UK.

The new Kindle Scribe models, unveiled last year, are now available on Amazon UK’s site as of April 8. These upgraded devices are sleeker, faster, and feature a colour display option for the first time. Prices for the new Kindle Scribe start at £449.99, while the colour-display Kindle Scribe Colorsoft begins at £569.99.
