“US Citizen Defends Home Amid Israel Settler Siege”

The recent encirclement of Palestinian residences by militant Israeli settlers in the village of Qusra, located in the occupied West Bank, is not an isolated event. However, the media spotlight has shifted towards the U.S. citizenship of one of the Palestinian homeowners, drawing more attention compared to the frequent acts of aggression by radical Jewish settlers aimed at displacing Palestinians from their land.

Loui Ridi, a businessman from Ohio, returned to Qusra on August 17 to protect his home, along with his brother and nephew residing there, as settlers surrounded it along with two neighboring homes. Ridi expressed his concern about the settlers potentially seizing his property if they were to leave. He highlighted a previous incident where settlers besieged a neighboring village, Jalud, forcing a family out of their home.

Israeli settlements in the occupied West Bank are deemed illegal under international law. The current administration led by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his ultranationalist coalition partners have overseen a significant expansion of these settlements, criticized for implicitly endorsing settler violence.

Upon his return to Qusra, Ridi raised an American flag on his building and sought assistance from the U.S. Embassy. The village is situated about 16 kilometers south of Nablus and is surrounded by settlement blocs, including Migdalim and Shilo, alongside an increasing number of outposts occupied by extremist settlers.

Incidents of settler attacks resulting in casualties or property damage have reached an average of six per day this year, according to the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, marking a record high.

The escalating violence in Qusra prompted strong criticism from U.S. Ambassador to Israel Mike Huckabee, who denounced the responsible parties as “Israeli terrorists.” He emphasized the reprehensible nature of the criminal activities targeting victimized families.

Huckabee’s support for Israel’s settlement policy and the biblical claims to the land by Jewish settlers has been evident. Despite dismissing violent settlers as a minority, critics argue that such actions reflect a de facto annexation of the West Bank facilitated by increasing violence.

The presence of Israeli border police and IDF units in Qusra aimed to restore order and remove settlers blockading Palestinian homes. However, Ridi reported instances of intimidation by settlers, underscoring the complex dynamics at play in the region.

The persistent challenges faced by Palestinians in Qusra, as highlighted by ongoing settler violence and military interventions, underscore the urgency of addressing the systemic issues fueling such conflicts. The precarious situation in the region demands a concerted effort to uphold peace and justice for all affected communities.
