“UK Evening Internet Slowdowns: Impact & Top Affected Areas”

Millions of internet users in the UK are familiar with the challenge of facing connectivity issues due to online congestion, particularly during peak evening hours. This is when many households simultaneously engage in activities like streaming, downloading, and video calling, causing local networks to become overloaded and resulting in slower speeds.

Comparatively, daytime hours see faster and more reliable download speeds when fewer people are online at home. However, as evening approaches and more users log on, the strain on the network leads to a noticeable slowdown in performance, akin to how traffic congestion affects a motorway.

A recent study by Broadband Genie has revealed the UK regions most impacted by these peak-time slowdowns, with Wigan (WN1) ranking at the top. Users in this area experience a significant drop in average download speeds from 167Mbps during off-peak hours to just 75Mbps in the evening, marking a 55% decrease.

Other areas affected by evening congestion include Galashiels (TD1), Harrogate (HG1), Exeter (EX1), and Rochester (ME1). These locations also witness notable reductions in download speeds during peak hours.

On the contrary, some areas in the UK experience improved internet speeds during the evening. Newport emerged as the top-performing area in the study, followed by Oxford, Glasgow, Blackburn, and Cambridge.

Broadband Genie highlighted the impact of evening slowdowns on broadband performance, emphasizing that like roads, internet networks can face congestion. The study, based on 144,509 broadband speed tests, identified locations where broadband performance fluctuates the most during peak times, with Wigan showing the largest decline of 55% in speeds.

The report also pointed out regional disparities across the UK, with Scotland leading in overall broadband performance improvements during the evening. Wales and the East of England also showed positive performance trends.

Experts suggest several measures for households to enhance their home internet connections, such as placing routers in open, central locations away from obstructions to improve signal quality. Providers like Virgin Media recommend regular router reboots to address temporary network issues and maintain a stable connection.
