Former U.S. President Donald Trump criticized the UK Labour Party leader, Keir Starmer, for his recent efforts to strengthen ties with China. Starmer engaged in discussions with Chinese President Xi Jinping, leading to an agreement to enhance their partnership.
During a media event for the premiere of a movie, Trump expressed concerns about the UK and Canada engaging in business with China. He emphasized the risks involved and hinted at potential consequences for Canada due to its economic relationship with China.
Trump also issued a warning to Canada, threatening to impose 100% tariffs on certain goods if a trade deal with China proceeds. This declaration was made through a social media post on a platform known as Truth Social.
Meanwhile, Starmer pledged to establish a more sophisticated relationship with China, as evidenced by recent agreements on visa-free travel and potential future visits between the UK and China.
The UK Prime Minister had a lengthy meeting with President Xi Jinping, characterized by cordial interactions despite discussions on sensitive topics such as human rights issues and geopolitical tensions, including the conflict in Ukraine and Russia’s involvement.
In a statement earlier this week, President Xi emphasized the importance of collaboration between Britain and China for global peace and stability, highlighting the turbulent nature of the current world situation.
