“Trump Urges Apple: Follow Google Maps on ‘Lake America’ Label”

The latest update on Google Maps has resulted in the appearance of “Lake America” labels, prompting U.S. President Donald Trump to urge Apple to implement similar changes in the default navigation app on all iPhones. This development sheds light on the significant influence of American tech giants on Canadian consumers and businesses, leaving them somewhat constrained by limited non-U.S. alternatives.

Anne Pasek, a Canada Research Chair at Trent University, emphasized the pervasive dominance of American tech monopolies over Canadian digital landscapes and associated legal jurisdictions. Recent instances, such as the renaming of Lake Ontario to Lake America on various Canadian websites, underscore this dependence on U.S.-owned platforms.

Following an executive order from President Trump to rename Lake Ontario amid trade tensions, Google adjusted its maps for U.S. users, allowing non-American websites the option to display the original name by localizing their settings. The company clarified that this update aligns with their standard practice for handling differing geographical names.

Despite the practical utility of mapping services from U.S. tech giants for Canadian businesses, concerns arise regarding potential vulnerabilities and overreliance on external platforms. Emily Osborne, from the Canadian Shield Institute, highlighted the need for diversification in digital service providers, citing Dutch companies like TomTom and HERE Technologies as viable alternatives.

Notably, the acquisition of Toronto-based Avenza Systems by Blue Marble Geographics underscores the diminishing presence of Canadian tech solutions in the market. Amid escalating tensions between Canada and the U.S., concerns mount over the possibility of the Trump administration exploiting other tech-related avenues to exert pressure, such as payment processing and cloud storage services. These developments underscore the importance of ensuring the resilience and independence of Canadian businesses in the digital sphere.
