The upcoming launch of Trump RX, a new discount medicine website, is expected to be officially announced by the US President. Unlike a platform for purchasing medication, the government-hosted website will guide Americans to direct-to-consumer websites of drug manufacturers for their purchases.
White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt revealed the site’s unveiling scheduled for Thursday evening, describing it as a cutting-edge platform for American consumers to access affordable prescription drugs. President Donald Trump will introduce the website alongside Dr. Mehmet Oz from the Centres for Medicare and Medicaid Services and Joe Gebbia, the director of Trump’s National Design Studio.
Trump initially hinted at TrumpRx in September while unveiling plans to lower drug prices to match those in other developed nations. He later promised in December that the website would offer significant discounts to all consumers, although it remains uncertain if the prices on drugmakers’ websites will consistently be lower than those available through insurance coverage.
The anticipated release of the website on Thursday follows several delays, with the administration not disclosing the reasons behind the setbacks. Last fall, Oz informed Trump that the site would display prices for consumers before the year’s end, but the launch was postponed to late January.
In recent months, the president has emphasized his efforts to reduce drug prices for Americans by striking deals with prominent pharmaceutical companies like Pfizer, Eli Lilly, and Merck. These agreements include lowering prices for Medicaid drugs to “most favored nations” pricing and introducing new drugs at discounted rates for consumer markets through TrumpRx.
