Toronto Hydro has successfully restored power to thousands of residents in the east end and parts of downtown after an outage that lasted over an hour on Wednesday night. The utility announced on social media at 10:30 p.m. that power had been fully reinstated, expressing apologies for the inconvenience caused and thanking customers for their patience. According to Toronto Hydro’s outage map, over 31,000 customers were impacted by the outage as of 9:40 p.m. The widespread power interruption was attributed to a loss of supply from Hydro One.
During the outage, the Toronto Transit Commission (TTC) reported disruptions to elevators and escalators at various Line 2 subway stations. Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU) also faced power failures at several buildings, prompting immediate evacuations and area avoidance advisories. Affected locations included Eric Palin Hall, Sally Horsfall Eaton Centre for Studies in Community Health, Rogers Communications Centre, Pitman Hall, International Living/Learning Centre, and Kerr Hall at the Toronto Campus.
TMU emphasized the need for evacuations due to potential safety system compromises, such as fire detection and sprinklers. All classes, labs, and exams were paused, with employees advised to seek alternative workspaces or take breaks nearby until power was fully restored.
