Marc-Antoine Dequoy, a retired Canadian football player, has returned to the field to compete in the IFAF World Flag Football Championship in Duesseldorf, Germany. Dequoy, who stepped away from the CFL earlier this year due to physical concerns, decided to try his hand at flag football after a brief hiatus from the sport.

Despite initial reservations, the 31-year-old athlete embraced the challenge of flag football after being approached by Canadian head coach Paul LaPolice. Dequoy took time to consider the opportunity, conducted research, and eventually found himself enjoying the game and the competitive spirit it offered.

During his retirement, Dequoy co-hosted a television show called “Avec ou Sans Cash,” which took him on a journey to various cities around the world. However, his passion for competition led him back to the football field, where he now competes in a different format than traditional football with new rules and strategies to master.

Facing a different set of challenges in flag football, Dequoy admitted to struggling with adjusting his gameplay habits, particularly in terms of avoiding physical contact and learning the nuances of grabbing opponents’ flags. Despite these challenges, Dequoy remains enthusiastic about the opportunity to represent Canada in the world championship.

Canada’s path in the tournament was altered when Nigeria withdrew from the competition due to visa issues, resulting in schedule adjustments for the remaining teams. The Canadian team now focuses on securing a top placement in the tournament to qualify for the Olympics, a goal that Dequoy and his teammates are determined to achieve.

With the Olympic dream now within reach through flag football, Dequoy sees this opportunity as a realization of his aspirations for sporting success at the highest level. The competition in Germany serves as a crucial stepping stone towards potentially earning a spot in the upcoming Olympic Games.
