“PSAC Clarifies Trusteeship of Yukon Union in Virtual Town Hall”

In response to the recent placement of the largest union in Yukon under trusteeship, officials from its parent union conducted a virtual town hall to clarify the situation and address inquiries. The newly appointed trustee and administrator, Josée-Anne Spirito and Chris Aylward, are affiliated with the Yukon Employees’ Union (YEU) parent organization, the Public Service Alliance of Canada.

The Public Service Alliance assumed control of YEU following an email to members indicating the suspension of YEU’s bylaws and the removal of its president, vice-president, and directors from their positions. Spirito emphasized that the decision to place YEU under trusteeship was carefully considered and not related to financial concerns or fund mismanagement.

During the town hall session, Aylward explained that his salary is funded by YEU, while his role is supported by PSAC. He mentioned encountering obstacles in his efforts to make positive changes within the organization due to resistance and constant questioning from executive members, leading to a state of dysfunction that necessitated the recommendation for trusteeship.

Despite some members expressing concerns about the situation, including Jessica McIntyre questioning the removal of executive members for seeking clarity on administrative processes, Spirito highlighted the importance of ensuring representation and participation in the upcoming leadership selection convention.

Spirito affirmed that transparency and communication will be maintained through regular town hall meetings during the trusteeship period to address member inquiries and provide updates on corrective actions. She also reassured members that bargaining efforts will continue without hindrance, emphasizing the commitment to securing a favorable deal for YEU members at the negotiating table.
