“Netflix to End Support for PS3 Consoles in 2026”

A popular streaming service has alerted users that it will discontinue its support for specific gaming consoles later this year.

Players who have Netflix installed on their PlayStation systems are encountering an error message when attempting to launch the application. This move marks the end of an era as Netflix has been accessible on the console for a considerable period.

Nonetheless, owners of PS5 and PS4 consoles do not need to be concerned as the support termination applies solely to PlayStation 3 consoles.

Users who continue to stream content on Netflix through their PS3 consoles are receiving a foreboding message indicating the impending changes. This marks the conclusion of 17 years of Netflix availability on the PS3 platform.

The streaming giant initially debuted on the console in 2009 via a Blu-ray disc, providing instant streaming capabilities. A year later, a dedicated app was introduced on the PS3 for enhanced accessibility.

Currently, Netflix subscribers can stream content in HD through PS3. The Netflix website confirms that PS3 and PS4 consoles can stream TV shows and movies in up to 1080p resolution.

For PS4 Pro and PS5 consoles, streaming in up to 4K Ultra HD with HDR support is possible. Netflix advises that titles with an Ultra HD symbol will stream in ultra-high definition if the internet connection supports 25 megabits per second or more.

The message displayed to PS3 users states: “Regrettably, Netflix will no longer be accessible on this device after March 2, 2026. Visit netflix.com/compatibledeives to view the list of supported devices.”

The decision by Netflix to discontinue support for the PS3 is not surprising considering the console was launched nearly 20 years ago. Sony introduced the console in November 2006 in the USA and March 2007 in Europe.

Reddit users seem unsurprised by the news. Comments in response to the announcement vary, with one user even describing it as “tragic.”

One comment reads: “I’m actually surprised it was still supported. I thought they had discontinued PS3 support long ago.”

Another user speculates: “I wonder if the Xbox 360 will face a similar fate soon? I hope not, as I frequently use it!”

A third user points out a unique advantage of streaming Netflix via the PS3 console, stating: “PS3’s Netflix allowed password sharing. That’s the only reason I used it. None of the other devices in my house permit it. This is disappointing.”
