Liberal Member of Parliament Shaun Chen has announced his resignation, citing ongoing health issues stemming from a car accident late last year. Chen, who has represented Scarborough North since 2015, revealed in a social media statement on Monday that injuries sustained in the accident have led to significant health challenges, making it difficult for him to fulfill his parliamentary duties. After consulting with his family, Chen expressed his decision to step down from his role in Parliament.
Prior to his time in federal politics, Chen served as the chair of the Toronto District School Board. Prime Minister Mark Carney acknowledged Chen’s dedication to advocating for youth and fighting against racism, extending well wishes for his recovery and future endeavors. Chen’s resignation adds to the recent trend of MPs leaving their positions this summer.
Among those exiting are former Liberal cabinet minister Steven Guilbeault and Conservative MP Cathay Wagantall, both planning to vacate their seats shortly. Conservative MP Larry Brock is also set to step down in mid-September to pursue a new role in the Brantford Crown attorney’s office. Additionally, NDP MP Alexandre Boulerice intends to leave his Montreal seat by the summer’s end to campaign provincially for Québec Solidaire in October. Chen is scheduled to resign at the end of this week.
