Iran’s foreign minister has dismissed recent threats made by U.S. President Donald Trump, who declared intentions to initiate the “MOST CRUSHING ECONOMIC OPERATION EVER TAKEN” against Iran. Abbas Araghchi, in a post on X, criticized Trump’s plan, labeling it as a diversion from America’s internal economic challenges. Araghchi warned that persisting with unsuccessful strategies would lead to defeat and worsen relations with Iranians. He emphasized that U.S. economic actions pose a threat to the global economy and sovereignty worldwide.
Trump’s announcement of an “Economic Warfare and Isolation” strategy against Iran was met with Araghchi’s response a day later. The U.S. president, in a Truth Social post, cautioned nations about facing “TREMENDOUS Economic Consequences” if they support Iran in any way. Trump urged allies to unite against the Iranian threat but did not specify any countries or the exact measures the U.S. would take.
China, a significant buyer of Iran’s oil, faces economic risks if the U.S. engages in further economic confrontations with Iran. Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian, during a press briefing, emphasized the importance of political and diplomatic approaches over sanctions and pressure tactics in resolving disputes.
U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent suggested that prioritizing economic measures could reduce the necessity for significant military actions against Tehran. Following the U.S. threats, oil prices surged to their highest level in over three weeks. Dan Shapiro, a former U.S. ambassador, highlighted the complexity of the situation, underscoring Iran’s capacity to endure economic hardships and retaliate against the U.S. and its allies.
Iran has been under severe economic sanctions for years, with new restrictions imposed by the Trump administration since the conflict began. Despite efforts to negotiate a lasting peace agreement, thousands have lost their lives in the conflict. The recent expiration of a 60-day negotiation period without an extension indicates a stalemate in peace talks between the two nations. Trump hinted at the possibility of resuming discussions in the future.
