“Iconic Winamp Music Player Gets Streaming Makeover”

A classic Windows music player, Winamp, is undergoing a makeover to compete in the streaming world. The iconic music software, which gained popularity in the late 1990s and early 2000s, has partnered with Deezer, an independent music streaming service. This collaboration will lead to the development of a new subscription-based platform utilizing Deezer’s technology and music library.

Scheduled to launch in early 2027, the revamped platform will offer users access to a wide range of music from the streaming service, as well as the ability to play local files and internet radio stations. Users will have the option to customize their interface using “skins,” a popular feature from Winamp’s original music player.

Despite facing competition from streaming services, Winamp remains available for download, with over 40 million active users still using the desktop version. Originally launched by Nullsoft in 1997, Winamp quickly became a favorite among users for storing and playing digital music files, boasting 60 million users in 2001.

Renowned for its tagline “Winamp, it really whips the llama’s ass,” Winamp set itself apart with its speed, efficiency, and style. The company’s CEO, Alexandre Saboundjian, expressed excitement about challenging the music listening experience once again with the upcoming changes.

While Winamp attempted to enter the streaming market previously, plans for a mobile version in 2019 never materialized. Acquired by AOL in 1999, Winamp faced challenges due to management issues and clashes between corporate leaders, allowing competitors like Apple’s iPod to gain traction.

Winamp’s customizable skins continue to evoke nostalgia for many music enthusiasts, with an online “skin museum” preserving the diverse layouts created by fans. Saved from closure in 2013 by the Llama Group, Winamp has made comeback attempts in recent years, including ventures into music NFTs and the launch of new mobile apps.

The pricing and details of the proposed streaming service are yet to be disclosed. While some fans are excited about the potential changes, others are apprehensive about the addition of a subscription model to a music player associated with the era of personal programming. Following the platform’s launch, users will have the option to subscribe to a premium service within the desktop player.
