Researchers have discovered that lake sturgeon can live much longer than previously believed, possibly exceeding 400 years. By analyzing data from sturgeon captured and recaptured over more than four decades in the Great Lakes, scientists have gained new insights into the longevity of these remarkable creatures.
Traditional methods of estimating a sturgeon’s age by counting growth rings on their fin rays have limitations, especially as the fish age and grow more slowly. Instead, researchers used capture data to calculate growth rates and model how long it takes for sturgeon to reach maturity.
