“Family Chat Campaign Promotes Safe Tech Use”

Giovanna and Tom Fletcher made the decision to get a phone for their 11-year-old son as he prepares to start secondary school. Recognizing the importance of managing and ensuring their child’s safety in the digital world, they emphasized the need for open communication within the family.

As the holiday season saw many children receiving smartphones as gifts, families are now navigating the challenges and benefits that come with this technology. To support this journey, a campaign called The Family Chat in partnership with Tesco Mobile has been launched, encouraging families to discuss online device usage with their children at every stage.

Tesco Mobile provides age-specific toolkits and resources to assist parents and children in understanding and utilizing online devices safely. Giovanna expressed her appreciation for the campaign, highlighting the valuable insights it offers to families striving to navigate the digital landscape.

Having two other sons aged seven and nine, the Fletchers have equipped them with tablets for communication and entertainment purposes. Implementing strict settings on their eldest son’s smartphone to limit internet access and ensure parental control, they emphasize the importance of maintaining an open dialogue with their children regarding technology usage.

Giovanna emphasizes the significance of setting boundaries for device usage, such as keeping phones out of the bedroom and refraining from using them during family time. She stresses the gradual introduction of internet access to children as they demonstrate readiness for such responsibility.

To enhance online safety for children, recommendations include setting up child accounts, ensuring accurate age input, activating safety filters, utilizing parental controls, and maintaining ongoing conversations about online activities. Dr. Rebecca Whittington, Reach’s online safety editor, emphasizes the importance of prioritizing a safe setup for new devices to protect children from potential online risks.
