Dolly Parton’s journey from humble beginnings to stardom has not only influenced her music but also inspired a theme park, a podcast, and now a musical set to debut on Broadway later this year. Titled “Dolly: A True Original Musical,” the show promises an intimate portrayal of Parton’s life through her own words and iconic songs that have shaped her experiences.
In a recent video announcement, the 80-year-old singer assured fans that the musical would authentically reflect her life story. Emphasizing the depth of her narrative, Parton shared, “It’s not just about the glitz and glamour; it’s about my roots, my struggles, my joys, and my journey to self-discovery.”
The Broadway production will feature a blend of new compositions created exclusively for the show alongside some of Parton’s classic hits, such as “I Will Always Love You,” “Jolene,” “Coat of Many Colors,” and “9 to 5.” Scheduled to kick off on December 7 in New York City, the performances are slated to run until November 21, 2027.
Expressing her excitement, Parton described the musical as a lifelong dream realized. With a career spanning nearly seven decades, she has penned over 3,000 songs, sold more than 100 million albums worldwide, and earned prestigious inductions into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame and the Country Music Hall of Fame.
The musical initially premiered in Nashville last summer, drawing a sold-out crowd during its six-week residency at the Fisher Center for the Performing Arts. Director Bartlett Sher acknowledged the profound impact of Parton’s persona, noting the joy and inspiration she brings to audiences worldwide.
The production aims to offer an unfiltered perspective of Parton’s life, showcasing a narrative that transcends the glitz associated with her image. Tickets for the show will be available to the public starting on Friday, July 10, via the official website.
