Farmers Scammed $20K: Business Dreams Shattered

After three years of realizing his dream of owning a farm close to his childhood home, Matt Penney and his partner were scammed out of $20,000, jeopardizing their business expansion plans. Penney expressed his disappointment, stating that the incident not only impacted their finances but also affected all aspects of their operations.

The scam unfolded when Pengrove Farms, renowned for its high-quality locally sourced products, was contacted by a supposed catering company in April. Despite no initial suspicions, issues arose during subsequent transactions, leading to a revelation by Square, the payment processing platform used by the farm, that all transactions with the caterers were fraudulent.

Alana Cosgrove, co-owner of Pengrove Farms, emphasized the significant impact of losing $20,000 on their small family business, highlighting the financial strain it placed on them. The scammers had developed a rapport with the couple, engaging in conversations and even physically collecting orders, fostering a false sense of trust that culminated in the fraudulent scheme.

Experts like Andréanne Bergeron from L’Université de Montréal highlighted the sophisticated nature of such scams, exploiting trust to execute fraudulent activities successfully. In Quebec, merchants bear the burden of chargeback liabilities, lacking adequate regulatory protections compared to other jurisdictions like the European Union and the United Kingdom.

Frédérique Lissoir, a legal expert, underscored the absence of safeguards for small businesses in Quebec, leaving them vulnerable to financial losses from fraud. While Square acknowledged the severity of fraud targeting small businesses, the onus remains on merchants to mitigate such risks.

The affected family, supported by their community, is advocating for legislative changes to shield businesses from similar scams in the future. Through crowdfunding efforts and community support, they aim to recover from the setback and raise awareness about the challenges faced by small businesses in such situations.
