WestJet has been criticized by Canada’s transportation regulator for creating obstacles for travelers with disabilities by restricting certain power wheelchairs from its aircraft. The Canadian Transportation Agency recently ruled that WestJet must eliminate its 136-kilogram (300-pound) weight limit on mobility aids by July 2027.

The regulator suggested that WestJet use “spreader plates” to evenly distribute the weight of the wheelchairs in the cargo hold and make alternative travel arrangements with other airlines until the weight cap is removed. The issue was raised by Steven Fletcher, a Winnipeg resident and former federal minister of state for transport, who was prevented from flying with his customized wheelchair on a Winnipeg to Toronto flight last year.

Fletcher and other advocates argue that the weight limit has restricted air travel in some regions and discriminated against individuals with disabilities. They believe WestJet’s policy has marginalized a segment of the Canadian population unfairly based on an arbitrary weight threshold.

WestJet has refrained from commenting on the matter as it remains under review by the regulator. The transportation agency is expected to issue a final decision on the notice period required for passengers using mobility aids to inform the airline before flying.

Last year, WestJet defended the weight limit, citing flight safety concerns and regulatory permissions to refuse transport of heavier mobility aids. The company determined the 136-kilogram threshold in 2024 after a technical examination of the cargo hold weight limits on its Boeing planes.
