However, he and his wife encountered extensive delays at the Scotiabank Saddledome, both for entry and the show’s start. Walia expressed surprise at the prolonged wait, estimating that the evening cost them around $700, covering tickets, a babysitter, and food.

Attendees with floor and lower level seats were restricted to the concourse as the venue was still being prepared, causing concerns about safety and disorganization. The concert, initially scheduled for 8 p.m., was rescheduled to 9 p.m., with the actual performance commencing at approximately 10:45 p.m.

Despite the delayed start, Walia praised the show’s quality but lamented missing out on the full experience due to the delays. He highlighted similar delays at high-profile concerts like Jay-Z’s final Yankee Stadium show and Harry Styles’ event in Mexico City, prompting questions about what a concert ticket guarantees.

Entertainment lawyer Kurt Dahl explained that consumers have limited rights regarding delayed concerts, mainly guaranteeing the seat paid for and a show to some extent. He emphasized that ticket terms often permit event time changes without notice, leaving little recourse for consumers in cases of lengthy delays.

Ashish Sharma, from the Consumers Council of Canada, noted the absence of statutory rights for delayed concerts and suggested the need for legislation to protect consumers in such instances. With the increasing costs associated with live entertainment, fans incur expenses beyond tickets, including travel, accommodation, and time off work.

Despite the challenges faced by concertgoers, Ticketmaster highlighted that a late performance, while inconvenient, does not automatically entitle ticket holders to refunds. Dahl suggested that consumer leverage lies more in public pressure than contractual terms, emphasizing the impact on an artist’s reputation.

Walia proposed compensation such as rebates or credits for future shows to acknowledge the inconvenience caused by the delays. Overall, the experiences of concert delays raise important considerations for both fans and the entertainment industry.
