Sokvin Vann found herself stuck in a rut almost four years ago, but her passion for K-pop and BTS, the globally famous boy band, guided her to start BTS Army Toronto. This local fan club, named after the broader BTS fanbase known as the “army,” organizes events and meet-ups to connect fans who share a love for the South Korean band.
Despite facing personal tragedy with the loss of her brother shortly after establishing BTS Army Toronto, Vann, now 43, persevered and expanded the organization into a thriving community. The fan club, led by Vann and her 24-year-old son Jordan, along with a dedicated team of around 10 individuals, hosts numerous events, charity activities, and promotes local Korean businesses.
Preparations are underway as BTS is set to make a highly anticipated return to Toronto after more than a decade. The K-pop group will perform sold-out shows at Rogers Stadium during their Arirang World Tour, entertaining around 100,000 fans over two nights.
To commemorate the event, the City of Toronto has temporarily renamed a section of Yonge Street as BTS Boulevard, extending the celebration until September 23. Additionally, the city declared the weekend of the concerts as BTS Weekend in Toronto, illuminating the Toronto sign in purple, a color associated with BTS and their fans.
BTS has garnered a dedicated following due to their meaningful music that touches on topics like mental health, self-love, and personal growth. Vann, a real estate agent who turned her involvement with BTS Army Toronto into a new business venture called Idol Konnect, recognizes BTS’s commitment to creating impactful music that resonates with fans worldwide.
With their successful ARIRANG album topping the Billboard 200 chart and selling over 641,000 equivalent album units, BTS has solidified their status as international superstars. The group’s Canadian stop in Toronto is a significant moment for local fans, especially after the cancellations of their 2020 concerts due to the pandemic.
As excitement builds for the upcoming shows, BTS fans in Toronto are eagerly anticipating a memorable concert experience alongside their fellow BTS community. Vann looks forward to immersing herself in the special connection that BTS creates with their fans during the performances.
