“British Columbia Family Rescues Baby Bear Cub from Lake”

A family from British Columbia rescued a baby bear cub in Okanagan Lake over the weekend after they noticed it struggling in the water. The Zamniuk family, who initially didn’t think much of the cub’s situation, quickly realized it was in distress as it struggled to stay afloat.

Christina Zamniuk described how the cub, later named “Boo Boo” by the family, appeared cold and shivering after they brought it onto their boat. They fed the cub some cheese and allowed it to warm up in the sun.

Upon spotting the distressed cub, the family contacted the B.C. Conservation Officer Service (COS) and the B.C. SPCA for guidance. Despite not receiving much assistance, the family was directed to bring the cub to shore without further interaction. Once on land, the cub hesitated to leave the family but eventually swam off and disappeared into the woods.

Although the COS didn’t respond to the scene, the family was advised not to handle the cub extensively to ensure its ability to survive in the wild. The incident was confirmed by the COS, and no further reports of an orphan bear cub have been received.

WildSafeBC commended the family for their actions, emphasizing the importance of avoiding contact with wildlife, especially during active bear seasons like September. The organization stressed the need to involve the COS in cases of animal distress and reminded the public to exercise caution around wild animals, as interference could impact their survival instincts.
