“Canadian Bison Jerky Selected for NASA Space Mission”

Shianna Smart, co-owner of Trails End Buffalo Stix in Gull Lake, Saskatchewan, was initially skeptical when she received an email from NASA. However, after further communication, she discovered that Canadian astronaut Joshua Kutryk had chosen their bison jerky for the upcoming NASA-SpaceX mission to the International Space Station on October 1. This selection process involved approval from both the CSA and NASA.

Smart expressed her excitement at the opportunity, especially since Canadian astronaut Chris Hadfield had previously enjoyed their bison jerky sticks in space back in 2013. She hopes that this exposure will showcase the jerky as a suitable snack for various occasions such as kids’ lunches, sports events, and travel.

NASA typically provides the majority of food for astronauts, but they have the option to customize their remaining meals. The Canadian Space Agency also offers Canadian food options for astronauts. Natalie Hirsch from the CSA explained that astronauts’ preferences are taken into account for their meals, and considerations include shelf life, space-friendly packaging, and minimal crumbs.

Local support plays a vital role in helping small businesses like Trails End Buffalo Stix thrive. Nolan Langer, assistant plant manager at the Saskatchewan Food Industry Development Centre, emphasized the importance of community support for local businesses. The facility has been processing jerky for nearly two decades, serving as a crucial hub for small-scale clients in Western Canada.

Canadian products chosen for space missions vary, including items like maple syrup from Ontario and Quebec, and salmon from the west coast. The exposure of these products in space not only showcases Canadian offerings but also demonstrates their quality and suitability for unique environments.
