“Rescue Society Saves Crows from Drug Overdoses”

An organization dedicated to animal welfare in Prince George, B.C., has been providing nasal naloxone to crows believed to have ingested harmful substances left within reach in the downtown area. The Good Caws Crow Rescue Society (GCCRS) has shared videos demonstrating their volunteers administering nasal naloxone to unresponsive crows, with the birds subsequently becoming alert and capable of flying again.

According to Dayna Slater from GCCRS, the crows being assisted are concentrated in a part of town known for illicit drug activity. She expressed concern over the situation, emphasizing the various factors contributing to the issue.

Slater noted an alarming increase in suspected drug overdoses among crows this year, with symptoms including closed eyes, slowed heartbeat, and some birds exhibiting a brown liquid foam from their beaks. While some crows have unfortunately perished, most have been successfully released after recuperating within 24 hours.

Dr. Kaitlyn Liukaitis from Birchwood Veterinary Clinic, who has treated some of the affected crows, confirmed that the symptoms align with those of a toxic drug overdose. She mentioned that using naloxone to reverse the symptoms is a common practice in veterinary care for various animals.

The rise in drug toxicity in British Columbia cities has led to multiple public warnings. In Prince George, there has been a significant increase in overdose calls, resulting in a constant presence of sirens in the downtown area where the impacted crows are found.

Advocates are calling for safe indoor spaces for drug consumption to prevent incidents like these, highlighting the challenges faced by individuals with addiction in accessing prescribed alternatives to street drugs. Slater is collaborating with harm reduction groups to address the issue and emphasized the need for covered garbage cans to prevent crows from accessing hazardous materials.

In conclusion, the situation underscores the impact of human activities on wildlife and the environment, reflecting the need for comprehensive solutions to mitigate such incidents in the future.
