Stephen Colbert made a grand return to late-night television, appearing as a guest on Jimmy Kimmel Live! after a hiatus following the cancellation of his show by CBS earlier this year. Kimmel warmly welcomed Colbert, likening his return to “a shark back in its natural habitat.” The atmosphere was light-hearted, with Colbert expressing relief at no longer having to immerse himself in the daily news cycle, which he described as consuming a “cup of poison” every night.

During the interview, Kimmel briefly touched on the circumstances surrounding the cancellation of The Late Show and made a playful reference to U.S. President Donald Trump. However, the focus remained on comedy rather than political commentary, showcasing a more relaxed and jovial Colbert. The conversation steered towards personal anecdotes, including Colbert’s decision to shave off his beard, much to the delight of the audience.

Colbert also shared details about a new film project he is working on with his son, delving into the world of J.R.R. Tolkien’s Middle-earth. Humorously acknowledging his newfound free time post-show cancellation, Colbert gifted Kimmel a Captain America shield prop before bidding farewell. After a decade of political satire, Colbert appeared content to step back and enjoy being a guest rather than the host, signaling a new chapter in his career.
