Iran announced on Wednesday that it had launched attacks on 10 ships near the Strait of Hormuz in retaliation for the sinking of five Iranian oil tankers by the United States. These actions mark the most significant exchange of attacks on shipping between the two countries since the onset of the six-month-long conflict.
The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) of Iran stated that they had carried out a ballistic missile strike on a U.S. base near Al Azraq in eastern Jordan. Additionally, they reported firing on two U.S. vessels and eight oil tankers that were attempting to navigate through a restricted area in the Strait of Hormuz.
The incidents in and around the crucial waterway led to a surge in oil prices, with the international Brent crude benchmark surpassing $100 per barrel for the first time since July. The conflict between Saudi Arabia and the Iran-aligned Houthis in Yemen further escalated tensions in energy markets, with the Houthis launching attacks on four cities in Saudi Arabia, resulting in significant damages to oil installations.
As a consequence of the heightened military actions, consumers in the U.S. faced an increase in gasoline prices, with the average cost of regular gasoline reaching $4.15 per gallon, a 26% rise from the previous year. Diesel prices also surged to $5.90 per gallon, marking a 59% year-over-year increase.
Bank of America analysts expressed skepticism about the prospects of a lasting resolution before the upcoming U.S. midterm elections, as tensions continue to escalate. The impact of the conflict was not limited to the U.S., as gas prices in Canada also soared, prompting the government to extend a gas tax holiday until the end of January.
Iran disclosed the establishment of a restricted maritime zone extending from Chabahar in Iran into parts of the Gulf of Oman and the Arabian Sea. Meanwhile, a drone strike targeted a tanker carrying Iraqi fuel oil in Iraqi waters, causing a fire aboard the vessel with no reported casualties among the crew.
The United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations agency reported incidents of disabling fire on vessels in the northern Gulf and Gulf of Oman during military activities in the region. Iran’s threats to oil tankers in Kuwaiti and Bahraini ports have added to the concerns about disruptions in maritime trade routes, impacting the global supply of oil, natural gas, and other essential resources.
In response to the escalating tensions, the U.S. military has enforced a blockade of Iranian ports, aiming to ensure the safe passage of tankers through the Strait of Hormuz.
