Toronto’s Summer McIntosh kicked off her races at the Pan Pacific Swimming Championships by finishing second in the women’s 200-metre freestyle in Irvine, California. The 19-year-old clocked in at 1:53.86, coming in just behind Australia’s Lani Pallister who set a championship record of 1:53.67. McIntosh expressed some disappointment with her performance, feeling she could have done better. She mentioned her focus now is on improving for future competitions, aiming for success at the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles.

Leading up to this event, McIntosh had not competed in the 200 free on the international stage since the 2023 world championships. She noted that training for the 200 freestyle fits well into her schedule as a 400 freestyler. McIntosh also mentioned her plans to participate in the 200 individual medley, 400 free, and 400 IM in Irvine.

In the men’s 100m backstroke, Saskatoon’s Blake Tierney secured the gold medal with a time of 53.18 seconds. This victory marked Tierney’s first international gold medal, attributing his success to his dedicated training regimen. He also mentioned his satisfaction with the result but acknowledged there is room for improvement in his performance.

Taylor Ruck contributed to Canada’s medal count by winning bronze in the women’s 50m butterfly final with a time of 25.23 seconds, setting a Canadian record. Later, she added another bronze in the 100m backstroke final. Ruck expressed her enjoyment of the competition and credited her energy and preparation for her success.

To conclude the day, Canada’s 4×100 medley relay team, consisting of Ruck, Ingrid Wilm, Oliver Dawson, and Finlay Knox, secured a bronze medal with a final time of 3:43.22. The United States claimed gold with a world-record time of 3:36.70, followed by Australia in second place.
