“MPs Call for Investigation into Alleged Espionage by Former Canadian Intern”

Conservative and Bloc Members of Parliament (MPs) are urging an urgent session of the House of Commons public safety committee to investigate espionage accusations against a former Canadian intern detained by Belgian authorities on suspicion of espionage. Conservative MP Frank Caputo expressed serious concerns about the allegations, emphasizing the need for a thorough examination of Canada’s security screening procedures to ensure the protection of sensitive information and the security of Canada and its allies.

The individual in question, Biwei Zhang, served as an intern at NATO’s Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe (SHAPE) in Mons, Belgium. While Belgian officials did not disclose her identity, a CBC News investigation identified her as Zhang, a systems engineer with an economics background. Zhang’s online resume indicates previous employment with the Canadian Space Agency and Statistics Canada.

Reports from security sources in Europe, including Reuters, suggest that Zhang’s behavior, such as excessive curiosity about colleagues, unauthorized access to restricted areas, and viewing files beyond her role in SHAPE’s IT Department, raised suspicions among NATO’s internal security services. Currently detained in Belgium, Zhang faces unproven allegations of espionage.

In response to the situation, Conservative MP Caputo highlighted the committee’s intention to scrutinize how Zhang secured the internship at NATO, the extent of security screening conducted prior to her appointment, whether any concerns were raised by Canadian or allied authorities, and the adequacy of monitoring procedures. Public Safety Minister Gary Anandasangaree has committed to investigating Canada’s security screening protocols to address any lapses and prevent similar incidents in the future.

Prime Minister Mark Carney indicated that Canadian security officials were not caught off guard by the arrest, emphasizing the importance of addressing any shortcomings in security measures. The case has underscored the importance of reviewing and reinforcing Canada’s security protocols to safeguard national interests and prevent espionage threats.
