In Saskatoon, the absence of snow didn’t dampen the joy of decorating our house with holiday lights early in December. Despite the snowless scene, I couldn’t help but admire our home once again, echoing the sentiment that “Home is where the heart is.” After three years in Canada, it feels like we have finally found a place to truly call home.
The first time my husband, teenager, and I walked into this house during our house-hunting journey, we were immediately captivated by the abundance of windows flooding every room with warm sunlight from all angles, even in the basement. “Ma, this feels like home,” remarked my child, a smile lighting up their face, a rare sight in recent times. The usual teenage quip followed, “And not a dentist’s office!” in reference to the numerous other houses we had viewed.
Our new house exuded beauty in its simplicity and coziness, with a front lawn gracefully extending and a backyard adorned with swaying poplar trees. The charm of the house was complemented by the ample windows that adorned it perfectly, making it feel just right – not too grand, not too small, but indeed perfect. It was truly love at first sight.
As I stood amidst the Christmas lights in our backyard, memories of my childhood home in India flooded back, where nature sprawled with greenery, sweet jasmine bushes, and sunflower plants. Recreating similar memories with my family filled me with gratitude and nostalgia, especially after the uncertainty that marked our move from Delhi to Saskatoon.
Leaving our cherished home in India to start anew in Saskatoon felt like leaving a piece of our hearts behind, magnified by the transitory nature of renting. Our rental apartment lacked warmth and personal touch, with thin walls and a sense of impermanence that haunted us.
